It's the rainy season

Day 2 of our mini Dakar was spoiled by rain. It's the rainy season after all, in South East Asia, but usually it's only a couple of showers and not an entire day of downpours. 'Unfortunately' we had planned a guided trekking because we wanted to visit some villages and waterfalls around Tat lo that are not accessible by road.

After only 10 minutes we were soaking wet and not much later, our trekking shoes had to come off, because some paths had changed into dirty streams. At the end of the day, we had to continue barefoot through the rice fields as our flip flops had sadly died in the mud.

On our way, we passed through two villages that belonged to animist minority groups. Most of the people in Laos are buddhists but in some regions, people worship spirits, that they believe to see in some people, animals, plants and rocks. These villages were deserted, except for some kids playing under the houses, as everyone was out working in the rice fields.

After five hours of plodding through fields and forest, we didn't really feel like touring around another day in the rain. We had packed too lightly as well and left all our luggage and (spare) clothes in Pakse, not the smartest idea for this time of year, I admit. So after a short deliberation, the three of us agreed it wouldn't be a terrible idea to leave the country side and get our asses back into the city.
