Queenstown and the Fergburger

There are two reasons for visiting Queenstown on the South Island. First one is the dramatic mountain landscape that's surrounding this small city. It is host to one of the best ski area's in the country. Second reason is a place called Fergburger.

Before leaving on this seven month trip, Benoit had checked out this website: matadornetwork.com/nights/international-cow-50-of-the-most-amazing-burger-joints-in-the-world/ that, as you've already guessed, reveals where in the world you have to go for amazing burgers. And Fergburger in Queenstown is blinking on number two.

So when a terrible weather forecast -once again- cancelled our plans of skiing in Queenstown, reason number two became number one.

When we entered the city on Saturday around 6 pm and drove past Fergburger, we didn't realize it was thé place because people were queueing as if they were to enter a night club and loud music came from somewhere behind them. But the next day at 11 am (!), same situation and it started dawning on us that this place was a little restaurant and that people were queueing to buy a burger here.

Seeing all of them discouraged me a little, after all I am not that crazy about burgers, but Benoit was on a mission (and still is) and wants to tick 'eating the best burgers in the world' off his bucket list. So later that day after a long hike in the mountains, we went for dinner in Fergburger. Same crowdy situation as we'd seen before but surprisingly enough we only waited 20 minutes before we got served. Most people take their burger out but we found a little table and ordered the classic Fergburger (me), the Tropical Swine (Benoit) and some fries with wasabi mayonnaise.

So now the apotheosis you've all been waiting for....does Ferburger deserve its second place on the most amazing burger list?? I'd love to say: just go to Queenstown and try it yourself! But I'll be nice and reveal you that they really make very yummy burgers! They are huge and super tasty, especially Benoit's one with fresh pineapple and beetroot. They are not greasy at all, full of fresh ingredients and also the bread is delicious and crunchy. The fries are as good as they can get outside of Belgium. Maybe the most pleasant thing was that, after we had finished our burgers, we didn't feel bloated or like we ate way too much. They are maybe a tad bit expensive but we paid with a smile and even went back five days later after our trip to Fiordland.
